The shutter comprises a cell containing a suspension, in an organic liquid, of colloidal particles which polarise light and which, under the influence of an electric field, orient themselves so as to modify the transmission of light through the cell. These particles are formed from a particularly heat-resistant substance, namely a perhalide of a salt of an alkaloid and an acid, into whose molecular structure is incorporated at least one halide of calcium, rubidium or caesium, the said perhalide being the reaction product of a salt of an acid and an alkaloid, of elemental iodine and of the said halide.
