Compounds of the formula: <IMAGE> in which R denotes alkyl, are obtained from alkyl esters of the formula: <IMAGE> by treating them with a base at elevated temperature or by treating them with a base and reacting the resulting alkyl trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-(trichloroethyl)cyclopropane-1-carboxylate (IV) with bicycloamine or a Lewis acid. The esters can be hydrolysed to give carboxylic acids (IA), which are also obtained via the intermediates IV either directly, by hydrolysing them with simultaneous elimination of HCl, or in two steps by hydrolysing them to corresponding carboxylic acids and treating the latter with a base or with a Lewis acid. Certain esters of the formula I are insecticides. <IMAGE>
