PURPOSE:To form ceramics consisting essentially of flaky beta-SiC with superior thermal impact and oxidation resistances, etc. by making a sheetlike substance of an organosilicon macromolecular compound infusible, cutting it in suitable size and subjecting to heat-treatment. CONSTITUTION:An about 10-100mu thick sheetlike substance of an organo-silicon polymer having about 800-20,000 no. average mol.wt. and represented by formula I or II (where R1 is -CH3; each of R2-R8 is H, alkyl, aryl or formula III, IV or V; M is Si, B, Ti or the like; each of (k) and (m) is 1-80; and each of (l) and (n) is 15-350) is made infusible by ozonization, hat-treatment in air or other method. This sheet is then cut into flakes each having about 10-100 times as large length and width as the thickness, and the flakes are heat-treated at about 1,200-1,800 deg.C in an atmosphere of a nonoxidizing gas such as N2, H2 or Ar to obtain ceramics consisting essemtially of beta-SiC. |
