Several knocking sensors are mounted on the i.c. engine and connected to a control regulating at least one working characteristic. The signal outputs of the separate sensors (22-25) are coupled via a multiplex switch (26) to a pinking control stage (15) constituting part of the control appts. The operating cycle time of the switch (26) has a fixed ratio w.r.t. the rotational speed of the crankshaft. Starting from the pinking control stage (15), the regulating values of one or more cylinders can be individually adjusted. The regulating values can be for ignition time points (20) and/or mixture supply (13) in the case of Otto engines and start of fuel injection for Diesel engines. The evaluating electronics is single channel, reducing the number of electronic components required.
