Vertical continuous casting plant - has extra track carrying two trolleys for manipulating cut lengths of cast billet, and starter dummy billet

The plant includes a mould located above a vertical guide roll track (I). Alongside track (I) is a second vertical track along which two trolleys are driven by motors. One trolley is fitted with levers holding a dummy billet forming a chill against which the real billet solidifies at the start of casting. After a specific length of the real billet has been cast, the dummy is swivelled out of track(I). The second trolley has a pivot on which a tubular basket is mounted; and a cut length of the real billet travels into the basket, which is then used to transfer the cut length to a horizontal exit roller track. Rapid manipulation of the dummy billet is obtd., so the time lost between successive casting operations is greatly reduced.
