Slab is cast in a mould forming a rectangular cavity with at least one adjustable narrow mould wall. On top of the narrow mould wall is a pivot shaft for an elbow lever. The outer end of the lever is attached to the piston rod of a work cylinder, whereas the inner end of the lever is provided with a slot receiving a peg on a consumable mould wall, which is slightly narrow than the permanent narrow mould wall. To increase the width of the slab without interrupting the casting process, one or both narrow mould walls are moved rapidly outwards, so that one or two consumable narrow walls can be located in the mould cavity. The consumable walls become anchored in the solidifying metal, and travel downwards out of the mould with the slab. There is only a very short transition zone at the junction between the two different slab widths.
|
