PURPOSE:To shorten the time of distance detection and to eliminate the need for a memory storing a picture-element signal, by arraying on a unidirectional conduction type semiconductor substrate groups of photosensitive picture-element units of two systems in two directions which cross on their extended lines. CONSTITUTION:Image sensor 2 has group 6' of photosensitive picture-element units 61'-6n' and group 6'' of 61''-6n'' arrayed linearly in two directions on unidirectional conduction type semiconductor substrate 1. The array directions of those phtosensitive picture-element unit groups 6' and 6'' of both the systems cross on their extended lines and this example shows the orthogonal L-shaped array. Then, control gate 8 covered with a light shielding film and charge transfer type shift register 7 are provided at the 90 deg. region side between both the group as reading means. Signal charge generated by unit photosensitive picture elements is transferred to the shift register by the control gate.
