A PROCESS FOR SULPHONATING ELASTOMERIC POLYMERS

Unsaturated elastomeric polymers are sulphonated to form a sulphonated polymer wherein the unsaturated polymer is dissolved in a non-reactive solvent at a concentration of 2 to 25 wt. % and sulphonated at between -100 DEG C and +100 DEG C wherein the sulphonating agent is a mixture of (a) either RCO2SO3H or a complex of a SO3 donor and a Lewis base and (b) at least 1 mole per mole of (a) of a second reagent which is (RCO)2O, RCOX or a mixture thereof where R is C1 to C6 alkyl or benzyl and X is halogen.
