Process and appts. are claimed for the cooling and removal of dust particles and tar from the hot effluent gas from a coal gasifier, esp. a rapid fluidised bed gasifier. The appts. has a fluidised bed of coke and ash particles, contg. a member of tubes, through which a coolant liq. flows. The tars condense, the fire dust particles agglomerate, and excess coke particles are continuously returned to the gasifier. The fluidised bed cooler may be preceded by a cyclone for the removal of coarse particles. Used in association with gasification of anthracite and coals (bituminous or sub-bituminous). Avoids the problems of direct water cooling, i.e. a large water usage, contaminated water prod. and difficulty of recovering latent heat are avoided. Rapid fluidised bed gasifier can advantageously be coupled to a rapid fluidised bed cooler, because both will have a large capacity for flow- and load-variation. |
