A mixture of the required proportions of the different constituents of a protective material of specified composition is formed, this mixture is subjected to a melting operation and then, while it is in pasty state, to a forming operation and, in this form, this paste is deposited onto the upper surface of the metal to be protected in the metallurgical vessel.
