The welding device for welding plastic webs (3, 4) is equipped with a housing frame, a heating device, arranged between the webs (3, 4) upstream of the joining point, for heating the webs (3, 4), and with an upper and a lower welding shoe. The latter are arranged directly one above the other. The hold together the heated material being welded. The lower welding shoe, forming a part of the welding device, is firmly mechanically connected to the housing frame or to the upper welding shoe in order, during welding, to form a unit supported only on the material being welded and to achieve reliable and good welding even in the case of a poor substrate. Both welding shoes have welding rolls. Furthermore, the heating device (102) mounted upstream of the welding shoes is pivotable about a transverse spindle (107) in the form of a heating wedge mounted on gimbals in a mount. The lower welding roll (88) is mounted in a bearing (86) which is connected via an arm (87) to the housing of the welding device.
