A vehicle door lock provided with a catch mechanism is of the type comprising a housing 1 for the catch mechanism and a bolt 7 which is relatively movable in relation to the mechanism. There is also an actuating element 11 for releasing the catch mechanism and bolt in order to open the door. Members are provided for reducing the force applied to the actuating element of the bolt when the catch element is released. This force-reducing device comprises a lever arm 19, which is pivotably fitted in the housing and comprises at least one butt stop, possibly in the form of a recess 21, 22, which cooperates with the actuating element and is pivotably mounted on a first link 24a, 24b forming a gripping jaw for holding the bolt in the locking position of the catch mechanism.
