Methyl nicotinamide 4-phenyl benzoates of formula (I), their salts and N-oxides, are new, (where X is H or halogen; n is 1 or 2). (I) are prepd. by esterifying N-hydroxymethyl nicotinamide (III) with halo phenyl benzyl acid chloride (II). (I) where Zn is o-chloro, H, m-bromo (hydrochloride), o-fluoro(fumarate) o-fluoro (N-oxide), 2,6-dichloro and p-iodo. LD50 is 100-400 mg/kg i.p. and 500 to greater than 1000 mg/kg p.o. (mouse). Used for prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.
