The energy retrieval system passes the waste gases from the combustion chamber through a heat-storage contact material. The cooled gases then flow up the chimney. The heated contact material is periodically wetted with water in the opposite direction to the flow of waste gases. The water is warmed in consequence and is collected in a container. The water passes from the container to a heat exchanger where it is cooled again before passing back to the contact material. The contact material is a loose material such as coke or balls.
