PURPOSE:A glass fiber for optical communication, having improved water resistance and minimized transmission loss, and containing GeO2-B2O3 system glass as a core material and SiO2-B2O3-P2O5-Al2O3 system glass as a cladding material. CONSTITUTION:A glass consisting of 50-95wt% GeO2, 2-30wt% B2O3 and 0- 40wt% alkali metal oxide as a core material is melt spun with a glass consisting of 70-85wt% SiO2, 7-30wt% B2O3, 0-20wt% P2O5 and 1-30wt% Al2O3 as a cladding material by the rod-in-tube method. Thus, a glass fiber for optical communication having a difference in refractive index of 7% or more between the core and the clad and a transmission loss of about 50dB/km can be obtained. |
