PURPOSE:To enable high energy infrared light to be transmitted by forming a fan- shaped tubular material with a base material for an optical fiber for infrared light, putting each edge part of the fiber in the hole of the tubular material, and press- bonding the tubular material by heating to prevent damage of the edge part. CONSTITUTION:Optical fiber 1 for infrared light is made of infrared transmitting material such as AgCl, TlCl or KRs-5 hard to melt and draw. Fan-shaped tubular materials 1c1, 1c2 are then press-bonded to incident edge part 1b1 and emergent edge part 1b2 of fiber 1 by heating. For example, edge part 1b of optical fiber 1a is put in fan-shaped tubular material 1c having a hold larger than fiber 1a in diameter, and material 1c is press-bonded by heating in the diametrical direction with press-bonding dies 3a, 3b dividable into two parts and provided with heater 2. After detaching dies 3a, 3b, fiber 1a is finished by polishing the edge surface. Thus, fiber 1 is made suitable for transmitting high energy light without damaging the edge parts which are apt to extremely undergo damage in working. |
