The winding mechanism is intended for coiling metal strips after longitudinal cutting of a single width web. It comprises a drive shaft (2), and pyramid-shaped housings (10) arranged in series, one behind the other and movable on the same axis. On the housings are segments (14) forming drum sections (9), each of which can wind at least one strip. The housings are actuated by driving plates (11) connected to the shaft for torque transmission. The housings are connected to the drum sections by rings with U-shaped cross-section so that the mechanism can be shifted from an effective to an ineffective position, or vice-versa, by a mechanism for axial displacement of the segments or housings.
