This mechanism is provided with a maximum-demand counting mechanism (6) for detecting the highest average power value recorded in equal measuring periods between in each case two resettings. The maximum-demand counting mechanism (6) is pulled up during the measuring periods by a driver (4) running back after each measuring period and decoupled from the electricity meter at the end of an accounting period and set to zero by a resetting motor (13). In addition, a progressive counting mechanism (16) for detecting the maximum value of a number of maximum values of the average power values within a reading period is provided. This is connected to the resetting motor (13) during the resetting of the maximum-demand counting mechanism (6) and takes over the highest maximum value of the average power values via a switching clutch (3a) and a store (5a). <IMAGE>
