Hollow wall brick with monolithic bonded ceramic shell - where layer of thermally insulating material is attached to outside surface of brick

The outside surface of the brick is at 90 deg. to its bearing surfaces, and is covered with a continuous layer (I) of thermally insulating material. Layer (I) pref. projects beyond all four sides of the outer surface of the brick by a distance (a) equal to half the gap thickness which will exist between adjacent bricks. Layer (I) may be pressed onto the brick and attached via a binder to the latter; or consist of a panel attached to the brick by an adhesive, clamps or pegs. Layer (19) pref. consists of foamed polymer; or a binder with a mineral filler which is esp. rock- or glass- wool, perlite, asbestos or chamotte; and layer (I) is pref. made hydrophobic via a silicone resin. A simple method of providing a brick with thermal insulation which also covers the gap between adjacent bricks due to the projecting edges of layer (I).
