Painting of moulded articles - with prior application of a diffusion barrier coating to prevent migration of substances out of the moulding

Mouldings are provided with a protective coat of paint after applying a diffusion-resisting coating to prevent substances migrating out of the moulding. Suitable anti-migration coatings, e.g. of a flexible isocyanate curing acrylic resin, a self crosslinking phenoxy resin or a peroxide-curing copolymer of ethylene, methyl acrylate and opt. a COOH-contg. termonomer, each applied from soln. followed by crosslinking. An adhesion-promoting primer layer may be applied to the anti-migaryion layer, comprising a peroxide-curing nitrile rubber, esp. with an acrylonitrile content of 38%. Process is esp. useful for applying clear or coloured protective paint coatings to rubber or PVC covered cables. The migration- resistant interlayer prevents diffusion of plasticisers, stabilisers, etc. from the cable covering to the outer coating and thus prevents discolouration and softening of this.
