902,421. Cutting by fusion. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. March 22, 1960 [March 30, 1959], No. 10088/60. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A copy-cutting machine comprises a tracer 16 foi sensing the profile of a pattern P and steering a cutting torch &c. B over the work, and means 8, 13 for moving the tracer over the template synchronously with movements of the torch B and in response to electrical signals derived from movements of the torch. The tracer is mounted or a compound slide-rest 10, 14 and the torch B on a similar rest 1, 4. A stylus or (as shown) a photo-cell tracer 16 points the direction of travel and a sine-cosine generator 17 signals the direction to a coordinate drive control 3 which regulates the speed and direction of motors 2, 5 for driving the slides 1, 4. The motors 2, 5 are mounted on the slides 1, 4 respectively, and drive pinions engaging racks 12 on the slide 1 and the bed 23. The resultant cutting speed may be pre-set. Synchronous generators 6, 11 on the slides 1, 4 and having pinions engaging racks 7, 12 on slide 1 and the bed 23, are connected to synchronous motors 8, 13 on the tracer-Slides 10, 14 and having pinions engaging racks 9, 15 on the tracer-bed 24 and slide 10 respectively, for moving the tracer. The ratio of cutter to tracer movement may be varied by gear-shift mechanism, change-gears or screw mechanism between slides 1, 4 and generators 6, 11 and/or between slides 10, 14 and motors 8, 13. A kerf adjusting device ensures that the tracer-path is laterally offset from the template-profile. |
