A laser knife (2) in which the laser beam (1), once it has been used to cut a designated tissue (7), is prevented from damaging surrounding tissues (8) beyond the designated tissue (7). A receiving dish (9) is mounted to the end portion of the laser knife (2) through which the laser beam (1) emerges. The receiving dish (9) has a downwardly curved portion which holds a liquid (10) therein. Liquid is supplied into the downwardly curved portion from a supply of liquid (16) such as a normal saline solution through a hollow portion (12) formed in the receiving dish (9). The laser beam (1) when it strikes the downwardly curved portion of the receiving dish (9) evaporates the liquid (10) contained therein so that the heat of the laser beam (1) is dissipated as the heat of vaporization of the liquid (10) so that the temperature of the tissue (7, 8) is not significantly raised.
