An audio-visual message device that utilizes microelectronic digital memory and digital logic to produce through an acoustic transducer (180), the audio portion of the message. In one embodiment the microelectronic digital circuitry is affixed to the back leaf of a greeting card (15) and a photosensitive switch (50) turns on the audio message when the card is opened. A variety of messages may be stored in the digital memory and only selected messages chosen for the appropriate greeting at the time of manufacture.
