PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of dyes and pigments, easily, in high yield, by the catalytic reduction of an aromatic nitro compound in an aqueous medium in the presence of a caustic alkali and a naphthoquinone derivative adding a specific fatty acid or its salt to the system. CONSTITUTION:In the preparation of an azoxybenzene compound of formula II by the catalytic reduction of a compound of formula I (R<1>-R<5> are H, F, Cl, Br, 1-4C alkyl, etc. with H2 in an aqueous medium in the presence of a caustic alkali, a naphthoquinone derivative and a Pt- or Pd catalyst, a 8-36C fatty acid or its salt is added to the reaction system. The addition of the fatty acid suppresses the excessive reduction reaction without suppressing the production of the compound of formula II. It is supposed that the fatty acid acts as a surface active agent to facilitate the mutual dispersion of the organic layer, the water layer and the H2 layer. |
