PURPOSE:To obtain a high-purity carboxylic acid chloride readily without discoloration and change with time, by adding a metal, e.g. Zn, to the reaction product of an organic carboxylic acid with phosgene in the presence of a lower aliphatic amide as a catalyst, and heat-treating the reaction mixture. CONSTITUTION:An organic carboxylic acid, e.g. acetic or propionic acid, is reacted with phosgene, in the presence (absence) of a solvent, e.g. benzene, and a lower aliphatic acid amide, e.g. dimethylformamide as a catalyst, at 30-100 deg.C, especially 50-90 deg.C. To the resultant solution, or concentrated solution or crude product prepared by the elimination of all of part or the solvent used, are added one or two or more metals selected from Zn, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni, or a compound thereof, and the mixture is then heat-treated at 70-200 deg.C, preferably 120-180 deg.C, in an inert gas atmosphere and distilled to give the aimed compound of high quality. |
