PURPOSE:To make possible the continuous measurement of sheath thickness even if there were position fluctuations in the cable by specifically controlling the driving of an ultrasonic wave transmitter-receiver. CONSTITUTION:An ultrasonic wave transmitter-receiver 4 is supported by way of a slide 7 in the long hole 6a, in the direction crossing the cable, of a horizontal guide 6 which is provided above a cooling tank 2 in parallel with water surface 3a of cooling water 3 and perpendicularly to the running direction of a cable 1. The slide 7 is so driven as to reciprocate within the long hole 6a by a motor 8 which is controlled by a microprocessor controller 9 inputted with the output of an ultrasonic thickness gauge 5. Then, the output generation time of the gauge 5 is added to the driving controlling of the transmitter-receiver 4, thus even if there were position fluctuations in the cable 1, its sheath thickness is measured nearly continuously. |
