The method enables simple generation of any given ringing signal cadences, such as those used, for example, to distinguish between internal and external calls, the feeding of the ringing signal into a subscriber station which is to be called beginning in each case with a complete ringing phase and the activation and de-activation of the ringing signal being carried out virtually without delay. Expensive time monitoring devices are not required. In the method, the ringing signal cycle duration is divided up into a specific number of equal-length time slots and a memory space of a ringing information memory (SP) is allocated to each of the time slots of the ringing phase of a call type identified for a subscriber station (TLN) which is to be called, which memory has a number of cyclically consecutively read-out memory spaces corresponding to the number of time slots of the ringing cycle duration, its complete read-out cycle corresponding to the ringing cycle duration. Either the >>Inject ringing signal<< or >>Do not inject ringing signal<< information is stored in the memory spaces of the ringing information memory (SP) assigned to the time slots of the ringing phase of a call type according to the call type for a subscriber station (TLN) which is to be called.
