A measuring box (65) contains an electronic monitor circuit connected by a switch (75) to either a galvanometer (67) or an audible alarm (73); and box (65) contains a high voltage power supply used when either a beta- or gamma- ray probe is connected to the box by a single cable. When an alpha ray probe (13) is to be used, it is connected to box (65) by an adapter (42) so the box requires no modifications. The pref. adapter (42) contains a set of six dry batteries used instead of the high voltage supply in box (65). Galvanometer (67) pref. has a logarithmic scale used to indicate alpha-, beta-, or gamma- rays; and alarm (73) is pref. used to indicate the presence of alpha rays. The advantage is a portable appts. with low wt.
