The small container is intended for distributing articles of food (2) e.g. to supermarkets. It is provided with a cooling unit consisting of a receptacle (4) which is arranged below the upper container wall (3) and has an inlet connection (9) for a low boiling liquefied gas and an outlet line (10) through which the evaporation product enters into the interior of the container. The receptacle may be a hollow cooling element (as shown) or may consist of a porous material capable of receiving the liquefied gas. It may be an interchangeable unit.
