A safety device is proposed which serves to protect persons in a transport system which is supplied from a two-pole direct current overhead line (9, 13) and has vehicles with rubber tyres. The safety device comprises a secondary-side star connection (1, 2, 3) of the supply transformer whose star point is connected to earth potential. The resulting ripple of the rectified component voltages with respect to earth potential permits fault currents to be detected with simple alternating current transformers. <IMAGE>
