The rigid tubular leg of the boot whose two edges overlap in the closed position has on either side downwardly pointing side walls (22) which are connected together to form a rigid shell (10) by a base wall (24) which forms a bearing face for the climbing boot (54). The actual tubular ankle sleeve sits rigidly on a U-shaped foot part whose arms form the side walls which stabilise the foot of the skier whilst the yoke grips round underneath the boot so that the skier can now step into the shell with the boot on. The boot can be fixed to the ski by standard bindings so that now a climbing boot can also be used for skiing.
