The device for recessing grooves in walls and ceilings allows the use of tools of different diameters with a single wedge block-like guide piece (1). The wedge block-like guide piece (1) forms two runners (2) which are arranged on each side of the groove (77) and slide securely over wall joints or the like with edges running obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the tool. By the avoidance of guides which engage in the groove (77), an even groove depth is guaranteed and the recessing of curved grooves is made possible. The wedge-block shape of the guide piece (1) and the top wall (4) running approximately parallel to the longitudinal axis (12) of the tool, together with an adjusting slide (18) guided on said top wall (4), guarantee uncomplicated adaptation of the device to different tool lengths. The runners (2) leave sufficient free space between them for pivoting out the tool (68) which is clamped in the hand-held machine tool (54) and can be moved into an optimum oblique position respective of its size by means of a single adjusting knob (40). A support with a rolling foot, together with a drill (68) used as the tool with a plate-type drill bit (69) and a centring journal (70), guarantee secure guiding of the device. <IMAGE>
