Prodn. of a gas electrode for a metal-electrolyte-gas cell for generating electrical energy involves laying a metal wire fabric (mesh) on a gas-permeable layer (film) of PTFE. The novel feature is that this is covered with a mixt. of PTFE emulsion, activated charcoal and an acid anhydride or a hydroxide, esp. of a gp. IV element, and then dried. The mixt. also contains a neutral protective colloid. The acid anhydride is an oxide of Si, Ti, Ge, Zr, Sn or Pb. The gas electrode is the cathode and the gas-permeable layer is on the air side. The anode consists of a metal (Al) and the electrolyte of dil. NaCl soln., esp. sea water. The electrode is not passivated by the Al hydroxide passing into soln. in the electrolyte and can operate with a simple electrolyte (NaCl soln. or sea water) without the metal (Al) anode decomposing in the electrolyte with evolution of H2. |
