A method of detecting breakage of glass fiber filaments drawn through orifices of an orifice plate. A radiation thermometer was arranged in such a way that a portion of a glass fiber filament at least immediately below at least one of orifices is focused in the field of view of radiation thermometer, and when the filament was breaked, the molten glass bead growth is focused in field of view of radiation thermometer to act on a variation of output from radiation thermometer, whereby the breakage of the filament is detected based on variation of output from rediation thermometer.
