DIRECT-REDUCTION PROCESS CARRIED OUT IN A ROTARY KILN

Sponge Fe is made in a rotary furnace by direct reduction of oxidic Fe ore pellets, using as reductant a solid carbonaceous material containing 30-70 wt % moisture and a high volatile content. Suitable reduction agents include lignite and peat. The reducing agent is charged to the drying zone of the furnace where the moisture and the volatile content of the agent are liberated and combustion of the C takes place by countercurrent in- troduction of an O-contg. gas. The kiln was charged at the rate of 250 kg/h and a 90% Fe metalization was obtained. In the redn. zone of the kiln the temperature was kept at 1020oC, imparting a solids temperature of 930oC.
