PURPOSE:To enable a smooth current flow and to enhance current efficiency by a method wherein before current is passed through cation exchange membrane in an electrolytic cell, the anode chamber is filled with water or alkali chloride solution, the cathode chamber with an alkali hydroxide solution containing an organic solvent, the internal pressure is made higher in the cathode chamber than in the anode chamber, and the pressure is maintained at a specific temperature for a specified period of time. CONSTITUTION:Alkali hydroxide is produced by electrolysis of an alkali chloride solution, using fluorine-based cation exchange membrane containing carboxyl gp. When setting the exchange membrane, the anode chamber is filled with water or alkali chloride solution, the cathode chamber with an aqueous solution containing more than 1wt% of a water-soluble organic solvent, and the pressure is maintained higher in the cathode chamber than in the anode chamber for 1-24hr at 0-50 deg.C, thereafter current is started to pass. |
