Polymers, e.g. olefin (co)polymers, thermoplastics or thermoplastic elastomers, rendered moisture-crosslinkable by grafting crosslinking auxiliaries, e.g. organosilanes, are crosslinked as extended materials, wound on drums or reels, by storage in a steam atmos. Novelty comprises introducing the drum or reel with the wound-up material into a chamber which can be hermetically sealed. The air present in chamber as well as in the layers of material is removed by suction, mixed with highly tempered satd. steam and re-introduced into the sealed chamber as a low tempered steam-air mixt.. Suction, mixing and re-introduction is continued until reaching the crosslinking temp. and then also for maintaining the crosslinking temp. during crosslinking The materials can be electric cables or conduits, pipes or hoses and profiles. Heating-through and penetration of coiled material layers is accelerated. The crosslinking temp. can be kept low enough not to damage the material. Crosslinking time is reduced.
|
