PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber transparent to infrared light having a wavelength of >=2mu, by using a GeSex (x>1) as a core or making a core and a clad with GeSex glasses having different x values, coating the glass rod with a highly viscous oxide having specific softening point, and making a fiber from the rod. CONSTITUTION:The tip of a tube 1 made of an oxide glass is sealed by heating with a gas burner, and small blocks of GeSex (x>1) glass, e.g. GeSe4 glass are put into the glass tube. The oxide glass tube 1 is made of, e.g. a glass containing large amounts of barium oxide and lead oxide and having a softening point of 500- 750 deg.C. The glass tube 1 is set in an electrical furnace having a carbon heater 3 so as to keep the sealed part of the glass tube 1 at the central part of the heater 3. The tube is heated and threaded introducing Ar gas through an inlet 4 to prevent oxidation of the glass, and the objective optical fiber composed of a GeSe4 core and an oxide glass clad can be obtained. |
