A process for removing bis-chloromethyl ether and l,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane from a mixture comprising these two materials and chloroacetyl chloride by contacting the mixture with a catalytic amount of ferric and/or aluminum cations at a temperature from 50.degree.C to 140.degree.C and a residence time of from 15 to 120 minutes. This process can remove bis-chloromethyl ether to a concentration of less than 0.5 ppm and 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane to a concentration of 0.05 weight percent, both based on the chloroacetyl chloride. 18,465-F
