The present invention provides a tetracarboxylic acid tetrachloride of the general formula II (II) in which R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group and X represents a direct carbon-to-carbon bond or an alkylene group which may be interrupted by at least one oxygen atom and/or may be substituted by at least one substituent selected from hydroxyl groups and lower alkyl groups; the compounds are intermediates in the preparation of dicarboxylic acid bis-(3,5-dicarbamoyl-2,4, 6-triiodoanilides) which are X-ray contrast agents.
