The recording system for data signals has a recording mechanism which records the reference signal over a section extending longitudinally between the centre lines of adjacent data signal tracks on which the data signal is recorded. Two types of reference signals of different frequency can be recorded at points located on both sides of each data signal track. The data signal can be a video signal, each type of reference signal being recorded transversely to the track and in line with one or many horizontal scanning periods of the video signal located in the longitudinal direction of the track.
