Appts. has an evaporator with copper cylinders each with an enlarged top into which are inserted the circulating tubes. The end of one tubes slopes downwards to a point about half way down, and the end of the next tube starts inside the top of the enlarged region. This assists the diffusion of the gas, and gives a quick freezing action. These tubes are immersed in awater container which is raised and lowered from the freezing zone by a motor driven mechanism assisted by counterweights so that successive ice layers are formed. When the required ice thickness has been detected, the freezing process is interrupted and the cylinders are discharged into a receptacle while the water is replenished.
