1314258 Supported Zeigler-Natta olefin polymerization catalyst MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 50286/70 Heading C3P Olefins are polymerized in the presence of (a) the product obtained by comminuting a mixture of a transition metal halide and a magnesium or manganese di-halide, and (b) an organometallic compound, optionally in the presence of hydrogen. The product (a) has a half-peak breadth in its X-ray diffraction pattern which is at least 1À2 times that of the magnesium or manganese di-halide before comminution. The comminuted product may be washed with a hydrocarbon solvent prior to mixing with (b). In examples, ethylene, propylene, and ethylene-propylene, butene-1 and -hexene-1 are polymerized in the presence of (a) MnCl 2 or MgCl 2 -TiCl 4 , TiCl 3 , VCl 4 , TiCl 2 or TiCl 2 (OC 4 H 9 ) 2 and (b) (i-C 4 H 9 ) 3 Al, (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Al, (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl, C 2 H 5 AlCl 2 , (i-C 4 H 9 ) 2 AlH, (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlOC 2 H 5 , C 2 H 5 AlCl(OC 2 H 5 ) or Zn(C 4 H 9 ) 2 , and in comparative examples, CaCl 2 , AlCl 3 or ZnCl 2 , as alternative supports, and also in which the magnesium halide is comminuted in the absence of the transition metal compound and vice versa, and in which the components of (a) are mixed but not comminuted. |
