PURPOSE:To simply, exactly detect the depth of growth of the crack in the roll, by boring plural longitudinal long holes from a side plane of the roll locating on the circumference under the outer surface of the roll drum, so as to open an end of this long hole to outside in order to introduce fluids into the long hole. CONSTITUTION:About three or four longitudinal long holes 2 are bored from a side plane so as to locate on the circumference under the outer surface of the roll into a suitable depth according to the quality of material, service conditions, etc., of the roll drum 1 itself. An end of the long hole 2 is open to outside and another end is plugged. If a crack 3 generates in the roll 1 and reaches the long hole 2, the long hole 2 is communicated with the open air through the crack 3. Hence, on a certain condition, gaseous substances such as air, etc., or liquids such as water, etc., under a specified pressure are introduced into the long hole 2 through its open end. The flow rate of fluids shows a different value according to the cases of the crack 3 reached or unreached the long hole 2. Hereby, the existence of cracks 3 can be simply, exactly detected by connecting the flowmeters 4, etc., to the open end of the long hole 2. |
