In a tundish (10) of a continuous casting installation with at least two strands, the bottom casting openings (1,2,3), which, for the start-up procedure, are sealed with fusible materials (12,14), are sealed with materials which melt with a rapidity dependent on the distance of the respective bottom casting opening from the point of entry of the pouring stream (7). The nearer a bottom casting opening (1,2,3) is to the point of entry of the pouring stream (7), the later it should be opened by melting. This is to ensure that the melt (17) flows rapidly to the more distant bottom casting openings (1,2) and hence to guarantee a melting temperature sufficient to ensure proper flow through them. <IMAGE>
