<p>The compsn. contains p-phenylenediamine (I) and o-aminophenol (II) or their cosmetically acceptable salts in a molar ratio such that after the addn. of an equal volume of 20 volume H2O2 and application to the hair for 30 mins. no Bandrowsky Base is detected in the compsn. The colourants are contained in a cosmetically acceptable medium. In one embodiment, the compsn. contains 1-2.5% (I) and the molar ratio is 2 or less. In another embodiment, less than 1% (I) is present and the molar ratio 3or less. In use, the compsn. is mixed with H2O2 or urea peroxide and applied for 10-30 mins. Alternatively, a compsn. contg. (II) is applied first, opt. followed by moderate rinsing, and then a compsn. contg. (I) and the oxidant is applied, the opt. rinsing being such that sufficient (II) remains. The combination avoids self coupling prod. of (I) or Bandrowsky base at the same time enabling the depth of shade previously conferred by this base, which can irritate the skin, by the novel coupling prod. of (I) and (II) which is 2-amino 5-(p-aminoaniliono)-N(p-aminophenyl-44-benzoquinonlimine.</p> |
