A magnetic recording material comprises a support and a magnetic film of magnetic anisotropy perpendicular to the support surface, where the magnetic film contains nickel. The amount of nickel is, in particular, in the range up to 30 % by weight, but not 0 % by weight, and is preferably in the range from 2 to 10 % by weight. The film furthermore comprises 5-20 % by weight of chromium and the remainder comprises at least 90 % of cobalt. The support can be polyimide or polyester.
