On the top of the moulding machine are bars via which a stationary press head is suspended. Top also has pivot mountings for hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders (HPC) carrying a sand hopper and thus driving the latter vertically. Hopper has a constriction, which mates with the periphery of head to close the base of hopper, and below constriction is a moulding frame fixed to, and moving with, hopper. A moulding box is placed on a pattern plate, which is then lifted by a hoist so the top edge of the box butts against constriction. The hoist and hopper are next both lowered, so sand can flow over the periphery of head into the box. The box is then lifted to compact the sand against a press plate mounted on head. Appts. is used to achieve rapid mfr. of moulds, esp. when using binder-free sand.
