The motor vehicle transmission has an input driven by a prime mover, and an output which drives the road wheels. A torque converter is provided which has an impeller. A reactor and a turbine are also provided. Also included is a ratio change arrangement. change-direction gearing includes a dog clutch arrangement operable to effect changes of rotation of the output of the gearing from a uni-directional input. The change-direction gearing is driven from the combination of the torque converter and the ratio change arrangement. A control is provided for operating the dog clutch to change the direction of rotation of the output and also for releasing the impeller or turbine of the torque converter from the member which drives it, while the dog clutch is being engaged or dis-engaged, to interrupt the drive between the input and the change-direction gearing.
