A Portable Acquisition Unit 12 comprises a memory 26 comprising first and second pluralities of storage locations, an A/D converter 16 operating in a real time frame for sampling at regular intervals the patient's heart activity and for storing such sample signals in corresponding locations of said first plurality, and a data processor 14 for processing the stored signals and for storing the processed signals in selected locations of said second plurality at a rate faster than the real time sampling rate. A clock 24 provides a sampling clock signal and a second clock (not shown) provides computer clock signals for the relatively fast computer time frame. The data processor comprises a first portion for determining the existence of a valid heart-beat and a second portion operating in the relatively fast computer time frame for determining the interval between the detected heartbeats and whether the heartbeat is regular. A Playback Unit 30 comprises D/A circuit 34, Analog Chart Recorder 36, and Chart Edge Printer 38. <IMAGE>
